Online sports betting is legal in Australia only with bookmakers licensed by a state or territory and listed on ACMA's register. We ranked the five best licensed bookmakers on their licence and record, markets and features, published limits, payments and payouts, apps, and support and responsible gambling, as of October 25, 2026. We don't list bonuses, which NSW, Victoria and South Australia ban advertising, and we don't collect odds: several bookmakers' terms forbid automated collection, so we score what each one publishes.

## How sports betting works in Australia

Online gambling in Australia is governed by the **Interactive Gambling Act 2001**, which the Australian Communications and Media Authority (**ACMA**) enforces. Betting online on racing, sport and other approved events is legal, but only with a bookmaker licensed by an Australian state or territory: offering it without one is an offence. ACMA keeps a register of every licensed provider, 213 of them on October 21, 2026, and four of our five are licensed by the Northern Territory Wagering Commission. You must be 18 or over, and the same rules apply at every licensed site:

- **no online in-play betting on sport**: once a match has started, you can bet on it only by phone, in a live voice call; racing is different, and can still be bet on online after the start;
- **no credit or crypto**: since June 11, 2024, bookmakers can't accept credit cards, payments through accounts or wallets linked to a credit card, or digital currency;
- **BetStop**: the national self-exclusion register, which every licensed bookmaker must check and honour;
- **limits and statements**: under the National Consumer Protection Framework, new customers are asked to set a deposit limit, and everyone gets a free monthly activity statement showing losses in red;
- **taglines**: since March 2023, betting ads must carry a tagline such as "Chances are you're about to lose", with the National Gambling Helpline number;
- **no inducements**: bookmakers can't offer credit, vouchers or rewards as inducements, any free bet's winnings must be withdrawable, and NSW, Victoria and South Australia ban advertising inducements altogether.

Online casino games and pokies are illegal, whoever offers them: see [are online casinos legal in Australia?](https://safebet.ai/au/guides/are-online-casinos-legal-in-australia/) Betting on elections is legal with licensed bookmakers and the Betfair exchange: see [prediction markets in Australia: the legal alternatives](https://safebet.ai/au/prediction-markets/). Our guide covers [the rules for sports betting in Australia](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/is-sports-betting-legal/) in detail.

| Odds & limits | 15% | What it publishes about its prices, maximum payouts and minimum stakes |
| Payments & payouts | 15% | Debit cards, PayID, POLi and other Australian methods, limits and fees, and how fast it says withdrawals are paid |

We don't collect odds automatically, because several bookmakers' terms forbid it: bet365's ban automated tools that copy or extract its content, odds included, and betr's and Dabble's ban scraping. So "odds & limits" scores what each bookmaker publishes, and you can check any market yourself with our [margin calculator](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/margin-calculator/). None of the five lists POLi, so no one gains or loses points for it. We don't list or score bonuses. We checked each bookmaker's terms, help centre and app listings, and the regulators' published decisions, between October 23 and 25, 2026. The full method is in [how we rank betting sites in Australia](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/how-we-rank/).

## What betting really costs

A bookmaker builds a margin into every price. At 1.90 on both sides of a two-way market, such as an AFL line bet, each side implies a 52.6% chance and the two together 105.26%, so the bookmaker keeps 5% of everything staked on that market over time. Multis cost more, because the margin compounds with every leg. None of the bookmakers in our ranking publishes its margins, so compare prices on the same market with our [margin calculator](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/margin-calculator/).

Australians lost $8.45 billion on wagering, which covers racing and sport, in 2024–25, out of $33.0 billion lost on all legal gambling: $391 per adult on wagering alone, according to the Australian Gambling Statistics. Bookmakers licensed in the Northern Territory reported $42.7 billion in turnover and 10.1 million active customers in 2025–26.

## Why Ladbrokes, Neds, TAB, Unibet and Picklebet aren't here

- **Ladbrokes and Neds**: both are run by Entain, which AUSTRAC took to the Federal Court over its compliance with anti-money-laundering laws (a release online by December 2024; we found no outcome), and which entered an 18-month court-enforceable undertaking with ACMA in May 2026 after more than 500 breaches of the BetStop rules. Ladbrokes' Android app is rated 2.8.
- **TAB**: the heaviest record we found. ACMA penalised it $4,003,270 in June 2025 for spam to VIP customers, more than $2.7 million in July 2026 for telemarketing and spam breaches, and $112,680 in January 2026 for BetStop breaches. In Victoria it was fined $1 million (2023), $4.6 million (2024) and $350,000 (2026), and ordered by a court to pay $370,417 for failing to stop a minor gambling (2024).
- **Unibet**: ACMA penalised it $1,014,120 in May 2025 for failing to close the accounts of 954 customers registered with BetStop, a NSW court fined it $60,000 in May 2023 for advertising boosted odds, and its iPhone app is rated 2.82 from 498 ratings.
- **Picklebet**: it doesn't offer in-play betting at all, and ACMA said in January 2026 it was finalising enforcement action against it over BetStop breaches.

## Staying safe

- **Check ACMA's register.** Only the providers on it may take bets online from people in Australia. Our [legality check](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/licence-check/) searches the register, and ACMA's list of blocked sites, for you.
- **Avoid offshore sites.** They're illegal, ACMA has internet providers block them, and BetStop doesn't cover them.
- **Watch the payment methods.** Licensed bookmakers can't take credit cards or crypto, so a betting site that does is a warning sign.

## BetStop

BetStop is the national self-exclusion register, run for ACMA. It's free: you register at betstop.gov.au, for anything from 3 months to life, and its phone line is 1800 238 786. Once you're registered, licensed online and phone bookmakers must not let you open an account or place a bet, or send you marketing, and must close any accounts you have and refund the balance. You can't cancel in the first 3 months, and after that only with a statutory declaration that you've seen a counsellor or GP; you're then removed after 7 days. More than 60,000 Australians registered between its launch in August 2023 and April 2026. BetStop doesn't cover illegal offshore sites.

## The 2027 changes

The Interactive Gambling Amendment (Gambling Reform) Act 2026, passed in August 2026, changes how licensed bookmakers can advertise from January 1, 2027:

- no betting ads in live sport coverage between 5am and 8:30pm, from 15 minutes before the scheduled start to 5 minutes after the end, and none during live play overnight;
- at most 3 betting ads an hour on TV between 5am and 8:30pm, and none on radio during the school run on school days, 8–9am and 3–4pm;
- online betting ads only for logged-in users who have confirmed they're 18 or over and haven't opted out, except on sites dedicated to wagering or racing;
- no betting ads on sports uniforms or at venues (existing deals can run until the end of 2031), no athletes, celebrities or influencers in ads, and no promotion of odds on broadcasts;
- no commissions linked to customer activity, such as sign-ups, deposits or bets, paid to anyone who refers customers, including affiliate websites.

The Act also requires banks and payment providers to block payments to illegal gambling services, and internet providers, app stores and search engines to block access to them. It stops short of the total ban on gambling ads that a parliamentary inquiry recommended in 2023.

## Betting responsibly

Most punters lose over time, because the margin works against every bet. Set a deposit limit when you sign up, never chase losses, and stop if it isn't fun. The National Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 is free, confidential and open 24/7, and Gambling Help Online offers free chat and email counselling around the clock; our [guide to gambling help in Australia](https://safebet.ai/au/guides/gambling-help-australia/) explains BetStop and where else to turn.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best betting site in Australia?

[bet365](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/bet365-review/), for most punters: it has the widest range of markets, publishes its limits, answers around the clock and has a lighter record than its biggest rivals. [PointsBet](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/pointsbet-review/) is the pick if you want your winnings fast, usually within 30 minutes.

### Is sports betting legal in Australia?

Yes, with bookmakers licensed by an Australian state or territory, for adults 18 and over. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it an offence to offer online betting to people in Australia without such a licence, and bans online bets on a sporting event once it has started. ACMA's register listed 213 licensed providers on October 21, 2026. See [is sports betting legal in Australia?](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/is-sports-betting-legal/)

### Can I bet in-play in Australia?

On sport, only by phone. The Interactive Gambling Act bans online bets on a sporting event once it has started, so licensed bookmakers take in-play bets on sport only through a live voice call; app features such as bet365's Quick Code or Sportsbet's Fastcode only help you place the bet over the phone. Racing is different: bets on horse, harness and greyhound races can still be taken online after the start.

### Can I bet on elections in Australia?

Yes, with a licensed bookmaker or the Betfair exchange, where the regulator that licenses it has approved the event: the Northern Territory, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania all allow bets on elections. Prediction markets such as Polymarket aren't licensed in Australia, and polymarket.com is on ACMA's list of blocked sites. See [prediction markets in Australia: the legal alternatives](https://safebet.ai/au/prediction-markets/).

### Are online casinos legal in Australia?

No. The Interactive Gambling Act bans online casino games, online pokies and online poker for people in Australia, whatever licence a site shows, and ACMA has internet providers block illegal sites: 1,810 addresses on October 25, 2026. BetStop doesn't cover them either. See [are online casinos legal in Australia?](https://safebet.ai/au/guides/are-online-casinos-legal-in-australia/)

### Do you pay tax on betting winnings in Australia?

Australian tax law disregards capital gains and losses from gambling (section 118-37 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997). The betting taxes are paid by the bookmakers: point-of-consumption taxes of 15% to 25% of their net wagering revenue in every state and the ACT, while the Northern Territory has none. If your situation is unusual, check with the ATO or a registered tax agent.

### Why aren't Ladbrokes, Neds, TAB, Unibet or Picklebet in your ranking?

Mostly because of their records. AUSTRAC took Entain, which runs Ladbrokes and Neds, to the Federal Court, and Entain is under an ACMA undertaking over more than 500 BetStop breaches; TAB has the heaviest record we found, with ACMA penalties of more than $6.8 million since 2025; Unibet paid ACMA $1,014,120 over BetStop breaches; and Picklebet takes no in-play bets, and ACMA said in January 2026 it was finalising enforcement action against it.

### How do you rank betting sites in Australia?

We score each bookmaker from 0 to 10 on licensing and safety (25%), markets and features (20%), odds and limits (15%), payments and payouts (15%), app and experience (15%), and support and responsible gambling (10%), and the ranking follows the overall scores. Only bookmakers on ACMA's register are eligible, and bonuses aren't scored. See [how we rank betting sites in Australia](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/how-we-rank/).

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 allows online bets on racing, on sport before it starts and on other events the regulators approve, such as elections, but bans online bets on a sporting event once it has started: in-play bets on sport are legal only by phone. Licensed bookmakers can't take credit cards or crypto, must honour BetStop, the national self-exclusion register, and must offer deposit limits and monthly statements. Online casinos and pokies are illegal.
- [How we rank betting sites in Australia](https://safebet.ai/au/sports-betting/how-we-rank/): We only rank bookmakers licensed by an Australian state or territory and listed on ACMA's register of licensed interactive gambling providers. Each is scored from 0 to 10 on six weighted criteria, licensing and safety, markets and features, odds and limits, payments and payouts, app and experience, and support and responsible gambling, and the ranking follows the overall scores. Penalties and undertakings from ACMA, AUSTRAC and the state and territory regulators lower the licensing score; we judge odds on what each bookmaker publishes, because several bookmakers' terms forbid automated collection of their odds; and we don't list or score bonuses.
