The check sorts every platform into one of these groups, based on whether it may legally deal with Canadians. - **Approved Canadian dealer** An investment dealer regulated by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) that CIRO has authorized to offer event contracts. It may only offer economic, environmental and financial indicator contracts with at least 30 days to maturity, without leverage, and its client accounts are covered by the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF) within its limits. - **Only through a Canadian dealer** Doesn’t let Canadians trade on its own platform, but some of its contracts reach Canada through an approved Canadian dealer, which applies Canada’s limits: no sports, entertainment, election or political contracts. - **Not registered in Canada** Offers real-money event contracts but isn’t registered with any Canadian securities regulator or authorized by CIRO, so it can’t legally offer them to Canadians. If something goes wrong, there’s no Canadian regulator to complain to and no CIPF protection. - **US only** Only serves customers in the United States. Canadians can’t open an account, and getting around that with a VPN or someone else’s details breaks the platform’s terms and can get an account closed with the money in it frozen. - **No real money** Play money or points only: nothing to deposit, win or lose, so no registration is needed. Its [dealer directory](https://www.ciro.ca/office-investor/dealers-we-regulate) says so on each authorized firm’s page. 4. **Check the warnings.** Search the [CSA investor alerts](https://www.securities-administrators.ca/investor-alerts/) and your provincial regulator’s warnings for the firm’s name and web address. 5. **Check the address and the app.** Type the official address yourself rather than following a link or an ad, and install apps only from the dealer’s own store listings. Clones of well-known platforms are a common scam. 6. **Know what’s allowed.** Even a legitimate dealer can only offer economic, financial and climate contracts in Canada. A site offering you sports or election contracts isn’t a Canadian dealer. If something goes wrong with a registered dealer, complain to the dealer first, then to CIRO; unresolved disputes can go to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI).
