Online sports betting is legal in Canada only where a province runs or licenses it. We ranked the five best sportsbooks registered in Ontario and Alberta on licensing and regulatory record, markets and features, published odds and limits, payouts, apps and support, as of October 22, 2026. We don't list bonuses or sample odds: Ontario's rules restrict bonus advertising, and several sportsbooks' terms prohibit automated odds collection.

## How sports betting works in Canada

Betting on a single game has been legal in Canada since August 27, 2021, when Parliament amended the Criminal Code; before that, only parlays were allowed. As with casinos, each province decides how betting is offered, and you must be physically in the province to bet on its regulated sites:

- **Ontario** licenses private sportsbooks: they register with the AGCO and run as agents of iGaming Ontario. OLG also runs Proline+.
- **Alberta** opened a private market on July 13, 2026, with operators registered with the AGLC; PlayAlberta continues alongside them.
- **Everywhere else**, only the province's own betting is legal: PlayNow in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Mise-o-jeu in Quebec, and Atlantic Lottery in the Atlantic provinces.

All five sportsbooks in our ranking are registered in Ontario, and all but Pinnacle in Alberta too. Our guide covers [sports betting laws by province](https://safebet.ai/ca/sports-betting/is-sports-betting-legal/), including the provincial sportsbooks.

## How the top five compare

| Sportsbook | Provinces | Max. payout | Withdrawals | AGCO record |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| bet365 | ON, AB | Up to $1M a day on major North American markets | 1–4 hours (Interac, cards, PayPal) | No penalties |
| FanDuel Sportsbook | ON, AB | US$1M per bet | "As little as 2 hours"; up to 5 working days | $350,000 (2026) |
| theScore Bet | ON, AB | $2.5M per bet | 24-hour review, then within an hour (Interac) | $105,000 (2025), $200,000 (2026) |
| Sports Interaction | ON, AB | $20,000 per bet, $250,000 a day | Up to 2 business days' review, then 1–3 days (Interac) | No penalties |
| Pinnacle | ON | $250,000 a day on parlays | Interac within 1 business day | No penalties |

## How we scored them

| Criterion | Weight | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing & safety | 25% | Registration with the AGCO or AGLC, and the AGCO's enforcement record |
| Markets & features | 20% | Sports and leagues, live betting, same-game parlays, cash out and streaming |
| Odds & limits | 15% | Published margins, maximum payouts and minimum stakes |
| Payments & payouts | 15% | Interac and other methods, fees and published withdrawal times |
| App & experience | 15% | How Canadians rate its iOS and Android apps |
| Support & responsible gambling | 10% | Help channels, limits, time-outs, self-exclusion and BetGuard |

We don't collect odds automatically, because several sportsbooks' terms prohibit automated collection of odds and prices, so "odds & limits" scores what each book publishes. You can check any market yourself with our [sportsbook margin calculator](https://safebet.ai/ca/sports-betting/margin-calculator/). Bonuses aren't scored or listed, because Ontario's Standard 2.05 allows them to be advertised only on the sportsbook's own site. The full method is in [how we rank sportsbooks in Canada](https://safebet.ai/ca/sports-betting/how-we-rank/).

## What betting really costs

A sportsbook builds a margin into every price. At −110 on both sides of a spread, you risk $110 to win $100, and the book keeps about 4.5% of everything staked on that market over time. Across Ontario's regulated market, sportsbooks kept 6.81% of $12.1 billion in cash wagers in 2025–26 and 8.06% in April to June 2026, according to iGaming Ontario. Parlays cost more than single bets, because the margin compounds with every leg. Comparing prices on the same game, and betting where the margin is lowest, is the simplest way to lose less.

## Staying safe

- **Check the regulator.** A legal Ontario sportsbook is on iGaming Ontario's list; a legal Alberta one is on the Alberta iGaming Corporation's. Our [sportsbook licence check](https://safebet.ai/ca/sports-betting/licence-check/) covers both.
- **Know the records.** The AGCO publishes its penalties: FanDuel was fined over betting integrity, and theScore over a high-risk player and cash-out offers it didn't honour.
- **Avoid offshore books.** No province licenses them, and if one refuses to pay, there's no Canadian regulator to complain to.
- **Self-exclude centrally in Ontario** with BetGuard, which covers every regulated site.

## Taxes

Casual betting winnings generally aren't taxed in Canada; they can be if betting is a business for you. See [how gambling winnings are taxed in Canada](https://safebet.ai/ca/guides/gambling-winnings-taxes/).

## Betting responsibly

Most bettors lose over time, because the margin works against every bet. Set a deposit limit before your first bet, never chase losses, and stop if it isn't fun. Every province runs a free, confidential helpline, listed in our [guide to gambling help in Canada](https://safebet.ai/ca/guides/gambling-help-canada/); in a crisis, call or text 988.

See [is sports betting legal in Canada?](https://safebet.ai/ca/sports-betting/is-sports-betting-legal/)

19 in Ontario and most provinces, and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. You must also be physically in the province where the sportsbook is regulated.

Across Ontario, sportsbooks kept 6.81% of cash wagers in 2025–26.

### Which sportsbook pays out fastest in Canada?

### Do you pay tax on sports betting winnings in Canada?

### How do you rank sportsbooks in Canada?

We score each sportsbook from 0 to 10 on licensing and safety (25%), markets and features (20%), odds and limits (15%), payments and payouts (15%), app and experience (15%), and support and responsible gambling (10%), and the ranking follows the overall scores. ## Guides

- [Is sports betting legal in Canada? The rules in every province](https://safebet.ai/ca/sports-betting/is-sports-betting-legal/): Yes. Betting on a single game has been legal in Canada since August 27, 2021, but only on sites a province runs or licenses. Ontario and Alberta license private sportsbooks such as bet365 and FanDuel; elsewhere, the provincial site is the only legal option, such as PlayNow in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan or Mise-o-jeu in Quebec. You must be 19 (18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec) and physically in the province.
- [How we rank sports betting sites in Canada](https://safebet.ai/ca/sports-betting/how-we-rank/): We only rank sportsbooks a Canadian province regulates, which for private books means registration in Ontario or Alberta. Each is scored from 0 to 10 on six weighted criteria, licensing and safety, markets and features, odds and limits, payouts, apps, and support and responsible gambling, and the ranking follows the overall scores. We judge odds on what each book publishes, because several books' terms prohibit automated odds collection, and we don't score bonuses.
