Sports betting is legal in Great Britain with bookmakers licensed by the Gambling Commission. We ranked the five best licensed sportsbooks on their licence and regulatory record, markets and features, published limits and Best Odds Guaranteed, payouts, apps and support, as of October 22, 2026. We don't list bonuses or collect odds: the bookmakers' terms forbid automated collection of their odds, so we score what each one publishes.

## How sports betting works in the UK

Sports betting is licensed by the **Gambling Commission** under the Gambling Act 2005, which covers England, Wales and Scotland; Northern Ireland has its own gambling law. Every online bookmaker serving Great Britain needs a remote betting licence from the Commission, wherever it's based, and every licensee and its web addresses are on the Commission's public register. You must be 18 or over, and the same rules apply at every licensed site:

- **almost any event can be bet on**: football, racing, in-play markets, politics and TV shows are all legal with a licensed bookmaker;
- **your age and identity are checked** before you can deposit or bet;
- **no credit cards**, since April 14, 2020;
- **a prompt to set a deposit limit** when you open an account, and since the end of September 2026, a deposit limit must stop you depositing once you reach it;
- **financial vulnerability checks** once your deposits minus withdrawals pass £150 in 30 days;
- **GAMSTOP**, which blocks you from every licensed online bookmaker at once.

Our guide covers [the rules for sports betting in the UK](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/is-sports-betting-legal/) in detail.

## How the top five compare

| Sportsbook | Licensed since (account) | Max. payout, top football | Withdrawals | App (iOS) | Regulatory record |

| bet365 | Oct 2019 (55148) | £2,000,000 a day | Not checked | 4.73 (454,548) | £239,085 settlement (2024) |
| Paddy Power | Nov 2014 (39439) | £1,000,000 a day overall (2025) | Instant bank transfer immediately; cards 1–4 hours (2025) | 4.74 (266,407) | Part of a £2m settlement (2025) |

| Midnite | Aug 2026 (101839); Dribble Media since 2018 | £250,000 a day | Most within minutes; all aimed within 72 hours | 4.69 (14,114) | None found since March 2021 |

## How we scored them

| Criterion | Weight | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing & safety | 25% | The Gambling Commission licence, the register entry and the Commission's enforcement record |
| Markets & features | 20% | Football, racing and other markets, in-play betting, bet builders, cash out and streaming |
| Odds & limits | 15% | What the bookmaker publishes about prices, Best Odds Guaranteed on racing, maximum payouts and minimum stakes |
| Payments & payouts | 15% | Debit cards, Pay by Bank, Apple Pay and PayPal, minimums, fees and published withdrawal times |
| App & experience | 15% | How UK bettors rate its iOS and Android apps |
| Support & responsible gambling | 10% | Chat, email and phone, hours, and limits, time-outs, self-exclusion and GAMSTOP |

We don't collect odds automatically, because the bookmakers' terms forbid it: Sky Bet's say the odds on its sites are for personal use only, and bet365's and Midnite's ban screen scraping. So "odds & limits" scores what each bookmaker publishes, and you can check any market yourself with our [margin calculator](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/margin-calculator/). We don't list or score bonuses: since January 19, 2026, the Commission has capped wagering requirements at 10 times and banned offers that mix betting with casino or other products, and a welcome offer is a poor reason to choose a bookmaker. bet365's and Paddy Power's UK help pages block visitors from outside the UK, so their reviews rely partly on dated Internet Archive copies, and say so. The full method is in [how we rank betting sites in the UK](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/how-we-rank/).

## What betting really costs

A bookmaker builds a margin into every price. At 10/11 on both sides of a two-way market, you stake £11 to win £10: the two prices imply 104.76% between them, and the bookmaker keeps about 4.55% of everything staked on that market over time. Accumulators cost more, because the margin compounds with every leg. None of the bookmakers in our ranking publishes its margins, so compare prices on the same market with our [margin calculator](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/margin-calculator/), or consider a betting exchange, which charges commission on your winnings instead; our [commission calculator](https://safebet.ai/uk/prediction-markets/commission-calculator/) compares the two. In the year to March 2026, online betting in Great Britain generated £2.4 billion of gross gambling yield, what operators keep after paying out winnings, half of it from football, according to the Gambling Commission.

## Staying safe

- **Check the register.** Every licensed bookmaker's web addresses are on the Gambling Commission's public register. Our [sportsbook licence check](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/licence-check/) searches it for you.
- **Avoid unlicensed sites.** Offering or advertising unlicensed gambling to people in Great Britain is a criminal offence, unlicensed sites aren't part of GAMSTOP, and the Commission can't help you if one refuses to pay.
- **Know the records.** The Commission publishes its fines and settlements: William Hill paid £12.5 million in 2023, Paddy Power and Betfair £2 million in 2025, and bet365's two licensees £582,120 in 2024.
- **Block yourself if you need to.** GAMSTOP covers every licensed online bookmaker at once; see [gambling help in the UK](https://safebet.ai/uk/guides/gambling-help-uk/).

## Taxes

Bettors pay no tax on winnings in the UK; HMRC doesn't treat betting as a trade. Bookmakers pay General Betting Duty of 15% of their profits, rising to 25% on online bets other than on UK horse racing from April 1, 2027. See [gambling taxes in the UK](https://safebet.ai/uk/guides/gambling-taxes-uk/).

## Betting responsibly

Most bettors lose over time, because the margin works against every bet. Set a deposit limit when you open your account, never chase losses, and stop if it isn't fun. The National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7; our [guide to gambling help in the UK](https://safebet.ai/uk/guides/gambling-help-uk/) covers GAMSTOP, NHS clinics and more.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best betting site in the UK?

[Sky Bet](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/sky-bet-review/), for most bettors: no fine or settlement in the Gambling Commission's records since March 2021, strong features, fast payouts and well-rated apps. [bet365](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/bet365-review/) is the pick if you bet big on football, with caps of up to £2 million a day.

### Is sports betting legal in the UK?

Yes, in Great Britain, with bookmakers and betting exchanges licensed by the Gambling Commission, for adults 18 and over. Offering or advertising unlicensed gambling to people in Great Britain is a criminal offence. Northern Ireland has its own gambling law. See [is sports betting legal in the UK?](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/is-sports-betting-legal/)

### Do you pay tax on betting winnings in the UK?

No. HMRC doesn't treat betting as a trade for the bettor, so winnings aren't taxed and losses can't be deducted. Bookmakers pay General Betting Duty instead: 15% of their betting profits, rising to 25% on online bets other than on UK horse racing from April 1, 2027. See [gambling taxes in the UK](https://safebet.ai/uk/guides/gambling-taxes-uk/).

### Can I bet on politics in the UK?

Yes, with licensed bookmakers and betting exchanges, if you're 18 or over. Payout caps on politics are low, though: £25,000 a day at Sky Bet and £10,000 at Midnite. Betting exchanges such as Betfair and Smarkets let you bet against other users instead; compare them in our [exchange ranking](https://safebet.ai/uk/prediction-markets/).

### What is Best Odds Guaranteed?

A horse racing promise: if you take a price and the starting price turns out bigger, you're paid at the bigger odds. In our top five, only Paddy Power offered it to anyone who opts in, according to its January 2025 help pages. Sky Bet limits it to Sky Bet Club qualifiers, and William Hill and Midnite offer it by invitation only. We couldn't check bet365's UK terms.

### Which betting site pays out fastest?

Sky Bet: Pay by Bank withdrawals arrive immediately after your first, and withdrawals to Visa and participating Mastercard cards in 1 to 4 hours. William Hill pays Visa Direct withdrawals within 4 hours, weekends included, and Midnite says it processes most withdrawals within minutes.

### How do you rank betting sites in the UK?

We score each sportsbook from 0 to 10 on licensing and safety (25%), markets and features (20%), odds and limits (15%), payments and payouts (15%), app and experience (15%), and support and responsible gambling (10%), and the ranking follows the overall scores. Only bookmakers licensed by the Gambling Commission are eligible, and bonuses aren't scored. See [how we rank betting sites in the UK](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/how-we-rank/).

## Guides

- [Is sports betting legal in the UK? Licences, tax and the rules](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/is-sports-betting-legal/): Yes. Sports betting is legal in Great Britain with operators licensed by the Gambling Commission, for adults 18 and over, online and in betting shops. Bookmakers need a remote general betting licence and betting exchanges a betting intermediary licence; both are listed with their web addresses on the Commission's public register. Bettors pay no tax on winnings: the bookmaker pays General Betting Duty, and a new 25% rate for online bets applies from April 1, 2027.
- [How we rank betting sites in the UK](https://safebet.ai/uk/sports-betting/how-we-rank/): We only rank bookmakers licensed by the Gambling Commission, at web addresses on its public register. Each is scored from 0 to 10 on six weighted criteria, licensing and safety, markets and features, odds and limits, payments and payouts, app and experience, and support and responsible gambling, and the ranking follows the overall scores. Fines and settlements lower the licensing score; we judge odds on what each bookmaker publishes, because their terms forbid automated odds collection; and we don't score bonuses.
