Betfair Exchange review 2026

The UK's most-rated exchange app, with markets from Premier League football and racing's biggest festivals to election results, MatchMe, and a 2% Basic package in Betfair's own example, but an Expert Fee for its most profitable customers.

#2 of 3 best betting exchanges in the UK

Our verdict: biggest exchange

8.6 /10

Betfair Exchange is the biggest betting exchange in the UK: its iOS app is rated 4.72 from 30,330 ratings, more than six times as many as Smarkets', and it covers football, racing's biggest festivals, tennis, cricket and election results. Commission depends on your My Betfair Rewards package; Betfair's own example puts the Basic package at 2% of net winnings. It ranks second because its most profitable customers can pay an Expert Fee of 20% or 40% of their gross profit, its licensee was part of a £2 million settlement over customer-interaction failings in December 2025, and we couldn't check its payments or support from outside the UK.

What is Betfair Exchange?

Betfair Exchange lets you bet against other customers instead of a bookmaker: you back an outcome to happen or lay it not to happen, ask for better odds than the ones on offer, and Betfair takes a commission on your net winnings. It’s run by TSE Malta LP; Betfair’s sportsbook and casino are run by sister companies under their own licences. It ranks #2 in our ranking of the best betting exchanges in the UK.

A note on our sources: Betfair’s websites and help centre were blocked to us from outside the UK, so this review relies on the Gambling Commission’s register, Internet Archive copies of Betfair’s charges page and Expert Fee FAQs, its developer documentation and its app listings.

Is Betfair Exchange licensed in the UK?

Yes. TSE Malta LP has held a Gambling Commission licence as a betting intermediary, the licence betting exchanges need, since November 1, 2014 (account 39561, licence 039561-R-319411-008), and betfair.com is on the Commission’s public register.

Its record isn’t clean. On December 17, 2025, TSE Malta LP and three other licensees trading as Betfair and Paddy Power agreed a regulatory settlement, paying £2,000,000 in lieu of a financial penalty, after a Commission assessment in April and May 2024 found failings in their social responsibility controls on customer interaction. That’s why it scores lower than Smarkets and Matchbook on licensing and safety. Check any site with our UK licence check.

Markets

Betfair’s app listing names football from the Premier League, Champions League and La Liga to the World Cup and the Euros; horse racing’s biggest festivals, including Cheltenham, the Grand National at Aintree, the Epsom Derby and Ascot; tennis, greyhounds, cricket, boxing, golf and rugby. “You can even bet on politics or election results,” it adds.

You can back or lay, request better odds than the ones available, and use MatchMe, which Betfair introduced in February 2021 to help get bets matched when the odds move slightly during a match or race. Developers can use Betfair’s API: a delayed application key, with delayed prices, is free, and a live key costs a one-off £499.

Liquidity

Betfair Exchange has by far the most users of the UK’s exchanges, judging by its apps: 30,330 ratings on the UK App Store, more than six times Smarkets’ and almost 19 times Matchbook’s. On an exchange, more users mean more bets waiting to be matched, so you’re more likely to get your price, in smaller markets and in play. We couldn’t get matched-volume figures to compare the exchanges directly.

Commission and fees

Betfair charges commission on your net winnings in a market, and nothing if you make a net loss; its charges page says that for “the vast majority” of exchange customers, that’s the only charge. Your rate depends on the package you choose in the My Betfair Rewards section of your account, which applies to customers in the UK and Ireland, among other countries. The charges page doesn’t list each package’s rate, but its worked example puts the Basic package at 2%: £100 of net winnings costs £2. Our commission calculator uses that rate.

Two further charges apply to a few customers:

  • The Expert Fee, which replaced the Premium Charge from January 6, 2025. Accounts in lifetime profit, with more than £25,000 of gross profit over their last 52 active weeks and bets in more than 100 markets, pay a weekly top-up that brings their total fees to 20% of their gross profit, or 40% above £100,000, after allowing for recent losses. Betfair says fewer than 0.5% of customers pay it, and the old charge’s 50% and 60% rates are gone.
  • Transaction charges for placing more than 5,000 bets in an hour, reduced by the commission generated that day.

These terms come from Internet Archive copies of Betfair’s charges page (October 11, 2025) and Expert Fee FAQs (January 11, 2026), because Betfair’s site was blocked to us; check your own rate in your account.

Deposits and withdrawals

We couldn’t check them. Betfair’s charges page says deposit and withdrawal charges are set out on the deposit and withdrawal pages in your account, which we couldn’t see, and its help centre was blocked to us from outside the UK. As at every licensed site, credit cards aren’t accepted. Check the methods, limits and times in your account before your first deposit.

App and experience

Betfair Exchange’s iOS app is rated 4.72 out of 5 from 30,330 ratings on the UK App Store, by far the most of any exchange app, and 4.3 from 4,624 on Google Play (October 22, 2026). You can log in with a 4-digit PIN, Touch ID or Face ID.

Safety, responsible gambling and support

We couldn’t read Betfair’s safer gambling tools or support hours from outside the UK. As a Gambling Commission licensee it must verify your age and identity before you bet and take part in GAMSTOP, which blocks you from every licensed site at once. Given its December 2025 settlement over customer interaction, set your own deposit limit before you start.

Who is Betfair Exchange best for?

  • Racing and football bettors who want the most people on the other side of their bets.
  • Political bettors, with markets on election results.
  • Developers, with a free delayed API key.
  • Not for very successful traders, who may pay the Expert Fee.

Our verdict

Betfair Exchange has the most users of any UK exchange, which matters on an exchange, where every bet needs someone to take the other side, and markets from racing’s biggest festivals to elections. It ranks second because of the Expert Fee for its most profitable customers, its December 2025 settlement, and payment and support details we couldn’t check.
