How online casinos work in the UK
In Great Britain, online casinos are licensed by the Gambling Commission under the Gambling Act 2005; Northern Ireland has its own gambling law. Every licensed company, and every web address its licence covers, is on the Commission’s public register, and offering or advertising unlicensed gambling to people in Great Britain is a criminal offence. Every licensed casino applies the same rules:
- £5 a spin on online slots, or £2 if you’re 18 to 24;
- at least 2.5 seconds per spin, with no autoplay and no turbo spins;
- age and identity checks before you can deposit or play, even in free-play mode;
- no credit cards, and a prompt to set a deposit limit when you sign up;
- GAMSTOP, the national self-exclusion scheme, which blocks you from every licensed site at once.
Our guide explains the law on online casinos in the UK.
How the top seven compare
Two pairs share an operator: BetMGM and LeoVegas are both run by LeoVegas Gaming PLC, and Jackpotjoy and Virgin Games by Gamesys Operations Limited, with the same payment rules and safer gambling tools within each pair.
How we scored them
Bonuses aren’t scored or listed. Several operators’ sites block visitors from outside the UK, so we used their help centres, which stayed readable, and their app listings, and each review says where something isn’t published. The full method is in how we rank online casinos in the UK.
What casino games really cost
Every casino game keeps a share of what’s staked over time. Its return to player (RTP) tells you how much: a slot with a 96% RTP pays back £96 of every £100 staked on average, over a very large number of spins, so about £4 stays with the casino before the luck of any single session. Every casino in our ranking shows each game’s RTP in its rules or information. In the year to March 2026, online casino games kept £5.7 billion of what British players staked after paying out winnings, £4.8 billion of it from slots, according to the Gambling Commission.
Staying safe
- Check the register. Only companies licensed by the Gambling Commission, at the exact web addresses listed, can offer casino games in Great Britain. Our UK licence check searches the register for you.
- Read the record. The register lists the Commission’s fines and settlements; we take them into account in every score.
- Use the tools. Set a deposit limit when you sign up, and use GAMSTOP if you need a break from every licensed site at once.
Taxes
Players pay no tax on gambling winnings in the UK; the casino pays Remote Gaming Duty, 40% of its gaming profits since April 1, 2026. See gambling taxes in the UK.
Playing responsibly
Casino games are built to keep more than they pay out. Set a deposit limit before you start, never chase losses, and stop when it stops being fun. The National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free, confidential and open 24/7; our guide to gambling help in the UK explains GAMSTOP and where else to turn.
