How we rank online casinos in the UK
We only rank casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission, at web addresses on its public register. Each is scored from 0 to 10 on six weighted criteria, licensing and safety, games, payments and payouts, app and experience, responsible gambling, and support, and the ranking follows the overall scores. Fines and settlements on the Commission's register lower the licensing score, and we don't list or score bonuses.
Key takeaways
- Eligibility first: only casinos with a Gambling Commission remote casino licence qualify, at the web addresses the register lists for them.
- Six criteria, fixed weights: licensing and safety 25%, games 20%, payments and payouts 20%, app and experience 15%, responsible gambling 10%, support 10%.
- The regulatory record counts: fines and settlements in the Commission's register and enforcement news lower the licensing score, the more so the larger and more recent they are.
- No bonuses: we compare the casinos, not their offers.
- We only link to web addresses on the Commission's register, because advertising unlicensed gambling is a criminal offence.
What we rank
Our ranking of the best online casinos in the UK compares casinos that people in Great Britain can legally use: companies with a remote casino licence from the Gambling Commission, at the web addresses the Commission’s public register lists for them. We download the register on the day we check and match every site to its licence; our UK licence check uses the same data.
The six criteria
| Criterion | Weight | The question we ask |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing & safety | 25% | Is the casino licensed by the Gambling Commission at this address, and what has the Commission found against its operator? |
| Game library | 20% | Which slots, live casino and table games can UK players choose from, from which studios, and is each game’s RTP shown? |
| Payments & payouts | 20% | Does it take debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Pay by Bank, what are the minimums and fees, and how fast does it say withdrawals are paid? |
| App & experience | 15% | How do UK players rate its iOS and Android apps, and how many have rated them? |
| Responsible gambling | 10% | Beyond the legal minimum (age checks, deposit limit prompts and GAMSTOP), which limits, reality checks, cool-offs and self-exclusion options does it offer? |
| Customer support | 10% | Can you reach a person by chat, email or phone, at what hours, and does it publish them? |
Each criterion gets a rating from 0 to 10; the overall score is the weighted average, rounded to one decimal, and the ranking follows it.
How we rate each criterion
- Licensing & safety: an active licence at the address you’d use starts near the top. We then check the Commission’s regulatory actions register, which lists its decisions since November 2023, and its enforcement news for earlier ones. Fines, settlements and warnings cost points, the more so the larger and more recent they are and the more serious the failings; a small, self-reported penalty costs less than a multi-million-pound one for failing to protect players.
- Game library: the studios named, live casino and table games, bingo where offered, whether RTPs are shown, and a published game count. A casino that doesn’t publish its line-up scores lower.
- Payments & payouts: published withdrawal times count most, then the choice of methods, minimums and fees. Inactivity fees, low withdrawal caps and dropped methods such as PayPal cost points.
- App & experience: ratings on the UK App Store and Google Play on the date checked, weighted by how many people rated them.
- Responsible gambling: every licensed casino must check your age and identity before you play, prompt you to set a deposit limit and block GAMSTOP members, so those are the baseline. Points come from what’s added: loss, stake and session limits, reality checks, flexible cool-offs, self-exclusion per product and limits set by the casino itself.
- Customer support: published hours, 24/7 chat, a phone line, and whether you reach a person or a bot.
What we leave out
Bonuses and promotions. UK casinos may offer bonuses, with wagering capped at 10 times since January 19, 2026, but we don’t list, compare or score them. Our ranking compares the casinos themselves.
Unlicensed sites. A licence from Malta, Curaçao or anywhere else doesn’t allow a casino to serve players in Great Britain. Providing or advertising unlicensed gambling to people in Great Britain is a criminal offence (sections 33 and 330 of the Gambling Act 2005), so we never rank or link to such sites.
How we follow UK advertising rules
- Licensed addresses only. Our links go only to web addresses on the Commission’s register for the licensee.
- Clearly marked as advertising. Our UK pages say that SafeBet.ai may be paid by the operators shown, and that only people aged 18 and over may gamble.
- The CAP Code. We follow the advertising code’s gambling rules, which apply to affiliates as well as operators: nothing aimed at or of strong appeal to under-18s, and nothing suggesting gambling can solve money worries. Under the Commission’s rules, each operator answers for how its affiliates advertise it.
Where our facts come from
The Commission’s register and regulatory actions, the Gambling Act 2005 and the Commission’s licence conditions, each casino’s help centre and terms, and the UK App Store and Google Play, each dated on the page. Several casinos’ main sites block visitors from outside the UK; their help centres usually stayed readable, and each review says where something isn’t published.
Independence
SafeBet.ai may be paid by casinos whose links are marked as sponsored, but a casino can’t buy a place or a score. See our editorial policy, and tell us if something’s out of date.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a fine lower a casino's score?
Because it's the Gambling Commission's own finding that the operator failed to protect players or prevent money laundering. A casino with a multi-million-pound penalty can still be a safe place to play today, but we rank it below casinos with a clean record, other things being equal, and each review gives the date, amount and reason.
Why do two brands from the same company both appear?
Because they're separate sites that many players choose between, and we score each on its own games, app and support. Where they share an operator, as BetMGM and LeoVegas do, and Jackpotjoy and Virgin Games, they share its licence, record, payment rules and safer gambling tools, and our reviews say so.
Does a casino paying SafeBet.ai change its score?
No. Every rating is shown and explained in the review, and the ranking follows the overall scores; the site won't build if it doesn't. Under the Commission's rules, operators answer for the affiliates who advertise for them. See our editorial policy.
What if a casino's site blocks visitors from outside the UK?
We use what we can verify: the Commission's register, the casino's help centre, which usually stays readable, and its app listings on the UK App Store and Google Play. Each review says where something isn't published, and we score what we couldn't verify conservatively.
