Wealthsimple Predict review 2026

Wealthsimple's standalone prediction-market app: Kalshi's economic, market and climate contracts for Canadians from the age of majority, funded instantly by Interac e-Transfer.

General information, not investment advice. SafeBet.ai isn’t registered with any Canadian securities regulator, and we only link to the two CIRO dealers allowed to offer event contracts in Canada.

#2 of 2 best prediction markets in Canada

Our verdict: best for beginners and 18- to 20-year-olds

7.6 /10

Wealthsimple Predict is the easiest way into prediction markets in Canada and the only one open to 18- to 20-year-olds: a simple app, instant Interac funding, fractional contracts and Kalshi's deep order book. You pay for that simplicity: US$0.02 per contract on every buy and sell, 1.5% to convert most deposits to US dollars, a mobile-only app rated about 3 out of 5, and slow withdrawals.

Pros and cons

What we like about Wealthsimple Predict

  • Open from the age of majority, 18 or 19, where Interactive Brokers requires 21
  • Trades on Kalshi, the deepest order book behind a Canadian dealer
  • Instant funding by Interac e-Transfer, and the account holds both CAD and USD
  • Fractional contracts: you can trade any dollar amount
  • A simple dedicated app with a guided first trade, risk reminders and a recommended loss limit
  • Wealthsimple says cash and contracts in the account are eligible for CIPF coverage

Drawbacks

  • US$0.02 per contract on every buy and sell, 20% of the price of a 10¢ contract
  • 1.5% to convert anything under $10,000, on a rate that already includes a spread
  • Mobile only, rated 3.3/5 on the App Store and 3.0/5 on Google Play
  • Withdrawing bank deposits means waiting for them to settle, then 1 to 3 business days
  • Its app and website have shown markets Canadians can't trade, which CIRO told dealers to stop in October 2026

What is Wealthsimple Predict?

Wealthsimple Predict is a standalone app for trading event contracts: yes/no contracts that pay US$1 if something happens, such as the Bank of Canada holding its rate or a city’s rainfall topping a threshold. Each contract costs between US$0.01 and US$0.99, and the price works as the market’s estimate of the probability.

Wealthsimple announced Predict on June 18, 2026, three months after the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) authorized it to offer event contracts, and the app went live in late July. The contracts trade on Kalshi, the largest US prediction exchange: Wealthsimple routes your order through a clearing agent to Kalshi’s order book, and it says it doesn’t set prices or take positions itself. The app doesn’t carry Kalshi’s branding.

Yes. Wealthsimple Investments Inc., the company behind Predict, is an investment dealer regulated by CIRO, and it’s one of only two dealers allowed to offer event contracts in Canada. The other is Interactive Brokers. Both deal under CIRO’s conditions, published in Bulletin 26-0076 on March 26, 2026 and tightened in Bulletin 26-0215 on October 16, 2026:

  • only economic, environmental and financial indicator contracts, settled on objective data;
  • at least 30 days to maturity when a contract is listed;
  • no sports, entertainment, election, political or unlawful-activity contracts;
  • no leverage or margin.

Wealthsimple adds its own bans on markets about death, armed conflict, personal harm and terrorism. The app has drawn criticism for showing view-only markets that Canadians can’t trade, and Finance Magnates reported on October 16 that Wealthsimple’s promotional page still showed hypothetical questions about an OpenAI IPO and Apple products, the day CIRO told dealers to stop displaying contracts that aren’t permitted. Our guide to whether prediction markets are legal in Canada explains the rules.

What can you trade?

Wealthsimple offered nearly 4,000 contracts at launch and now says “thousands”, in three categories:

  • Financial markets: stock indexes, asset prices and company metrics.
  • Economic data: interest rates, inflation and employment, including the Bank of Canada’s rate decisions.
  • Climate: temperature and precipitation.

The 30-day rule applies to how long a contract has been listed, not to how long you hold it: Wealthsimple says you can trade until a contract matures, as long as it was listed at least 30 days earlier. That still rules out Kalshi’s daily and weekly contracts, such as where a stock index closes today.

You can buy fractional contracts, so any dollar amount works, and place market or limit orders. Early users complained that limit orders were missing; the help centre now lists them.

Fees and currency conversion

Cost Wealthsimple Predict
Trading fee US$0.02 per contract on every buy and every sell
Fractional orders Fee rounded to the nearest cent (0.25 contracts: US$0.01)
Other trading commissions None
Currency conversion 1.5% under $10,000; 1% to $24,999; 0.5% to $99,999; free from $100,000, on a rate that includes a spread

The flat US$0.02 is light on mid-priced contracts and heavy on cheap ones. On a 50¢ contract it’s 4% of the price; on a 10¢ contract, 20%. The Globe and Mail worked out that 100 contracts at 1¢ cost US$0.63 in fees on Kalshi directly but US$2 on Predict.

The currency conversion adds up too. Contracts are priced in US dollars, so Canadian dollars are converted when you trade, at 1.5% on anything under $10,000, and again if you bring winnings back to Canadian dollars. The account can hold both currencies, and you can move US dollars in from another Wealthsimple account to avoid converting. For conversions under about US$133, Wealthsimple’s 1.5% is still cheaper than Interactive Brokers’ US$2 minimum. Our fee calculator works out the whole cost in Canadian dollars.

Deposits and withdrawals

Predict is a separate, non-registered account, so you can’t trade it inside a TFSA or RRSP. You fund it by:

  • Interac e-Transfer: tradable instantly, with no hold.
  • Linked bank account: instantly tradable up to about $5,000, a limit that resets every 3 business days; larger amounts within 5 business days.
  • Transfers from other Wealthsimple accounts: timing depends on the account.

Debit cards aren’t supported. Withdrawals take 1 to 3 business days once bank deposits have settled, which takes 5 business days. To withdraw US dollars you need a linked US-dollar bank account, because currency isn’t converted automatically on withdrawal.

Liquidity

Because orders go to Kalshi’s order book, Predict draws on the deepest liquidity behind either Canadian dealer. In Kalshi’s Bank of Canada rate market, open interest stood at 205,284 on October 22, 2026, against 399 in ForecastEx’s equivalent at Interactive Brokers. Some Play Store reviewers still complain about slippage in quieter markets, and the app flags thin markets with a “low volume” warning, so use limit orders there.

App and experience

Predict runs only on iPhone and Android; there’s no web version. On October 22, 2026, it was rated 3.3 out of 5 from 92 ratings in Canada’s App Store and 3.0 from 73 on Google Play. Common complaints are the US-dollar pricing and its conversion costs, the fee on cheap contracts, slow settlement and withdrawals, and missing features at launch. Markets trade around the clock except during two maintenance windows, Thursdays 3 to 5 a.m. and Sundays 2 to 5 a.m. Eastern.

What it does well is onboarding. Anyone can browse markets without an account, existing Wealthsimple clients sign in with their usual login, and every new trader gets mandatory onboarding and a guided first trade, with definitions where you need them.

Safety, risk tools and support

Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO member and a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), and Wealthsimple says the cash and contracts in a Predict account are eligible for CIPF coverage, within its limits, if the firm becomes insolvent. Predict is excluded from Wealthsimple’s separate guarantee against unauthorized transactions.

Each trader gets a recommended loss limit based on the income and net worth given at sign-up; it triggers warnings, not a block. In August, Wealthsimple said it was building a deposit cap, trading breaks and self-exclusion; we couldn’t find them documented as live on October 22, 2026. Support is by chat and phone (1-855-255-9038), and Predict has its own email, [email protected], for settlement problems.

Who is it best for?

Wealthsimple Predict suits newcomers, existing Wealthsimple clients and anyone aged 18 to 20, who can’t use Interactive Brokers. It’s also reasonable for small, occasional trades on mid-priced contracts, where the US$0.02 fee matters less and its 1.5% conversion beats IBKR’s US$2 minimum. If you’re 21 or older and trade larger amounts, Interactive Brokers costs less; our head-to-head comparison shows where the line falls.

Our verdict

Wealthsimple Predict is the easiest way to trade prediction markets in Canada: open from the age of majority, funded instantly by Interac e-Transfer, with fractional contracts, a guided first trade and Kalshi’s deep order book behind it. It ranks second because it costs more than Interactive Brokers, per contract and per conversion, runs only on a phone app rated about 3 out of 5, and makes you wait for withdrawals.

Wealthsimple Predict FAQ

Is Wealthsimple Predict legal in Canada?

Yes. Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO-regulated investment dealer, and CIRO authorized it in March 2026 to offer event contracts. Like Interactive Brokers, it may only offer economic, financial and climate contracts with at least 30 days to maturity, with no leverage. Our guide to whether prediction markets are legal in Canada explains the rules.

Is Wealthsimple Predict the same as Kalshi?

It trades Kalshi's contracts: orders go through a clearing agent to Kalshi's order book. But Canadians only get the economic, financial and climate contracts that CIRO allows, with no sports or elections, and Wealthsimple charges its own US$0.02 fee per contract. See is Kalshi available in Canada?

How much does Wealthsimple Predict cost?

US$0.02 per contract on every buy and every sell, with no other trading commission. Contracts are in US dollars, so if you fund in Canadian dollars you also pay Wealthsimple's conversion fee: 1.5% under $10,000, less on larger conversions. Our fee calculator works out an order in Canadian dollars.

Can I bet on sports or elections with Wealthsimple Predict?

No. Canadian dealers aren't allowed to offer sports, entertainment, election or political contracts. Sports betting is legal in Canada only through provincial sites and, in Ontario, private sportsbooks registered with the AGCO.

How old do you have to be to use Wealthsimple Predict?

The age of majority in your province: 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan, and 19 elsewhere. That makes it the only legal prediction market for 18- to 20-year-olds, since Interactive Brokers requires 21.

Can I use Wealthsimple Predict in a TFSA or RRSP?

No. Predict trading happens in a separate, non-registered account with Wealthsimple Investments Inc. Moving money in from a TFSA or RRSP counts as a withdrawal from that account.

How are Wealthsimple Predict winnings taxed?

Wealthsimple's help centre says gains and losses are generally capital gains or losses, reported in Canadian dollars at each transaction's exchange rate; frequent trading can make them business income. Our guide to prediction market taxes in Canada explains how to report them.
