How we rank online casinos in Canada

We only rank online casinos that a Canadian province regulates: private sites registered with the AGCO in Ontario or the AGLC in Alberta, and the provinces' own sites. Each is scored from 0 to 10 on six weighted criteria, licensing and safety, games, payments and payouts, apps, responsible gambling tools and support, and the ranking follows the overall scores. Bonuses don't count, because Ontario's advertising rules keep them on the casinos' own sites.

Key takeaways

  • Eligibility first: only casinos regulated by a Canadian province qualify. Offshore casinos are never ranked, whatever licence they show.
  • Six criteria, fixed weights: licensing and safety 25%, game library 20%, payments and payouts 20%, app and experience 15%, responsible gambling 10%, customer support 10%.
  • No bonus or loyalty scores: Ontario's Standard 2.05 allows bonuses to be advertised only on a casino's own site, so we don't list or score them anywhere in Canada.
  • Regulatory records count: every AGCO penalty lowers the licensing score, and we say what it was for.
  • Facts come from primary sources, dated on each page: regulators' lists, the casinos' own terms and help pages, and the app stores.

What we rank

Our ranking of the best online casinos in Canada compares real-money online casinos that Canadians can legally use. Because gambling is run or licensed by each province, that means three kinds of site:

  • Private casinos registered in Ontario, with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), operating as agents of iGaming Ontario.
  • Private casinos registered in Alberta, with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), under agreements with the Alberta iGaming Corporation.
  • Provincial sites, run by a province’s lottery or gaming corporation, such as OLG.ca in Ontario and PlayNow in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Every card in the ranking shows the provinces where the casino is legal, and you must be physically there to play.

The six criteria

Criterion Weight The question we ask
Licensing & safety 25% Is it registered with the AGCO and live through iGaming Ontario, registered with the AGLC in Alberta, or run by a provincial lottery corporation, and how clean is its record with the regulator?
Game library 20% How many slots, table games, live dealer tables and jackpots can you play in your province, from which studios, and can you find each game’s RTP?
Payments & payouts 20% Does it take Interac and the other ways Canadians pay, what are the minimums, limits and fees, and how fast does it say withdrawals are paid?
App & experience 15% How do Canadians rate its iOS and Android apps, and how easy is it to find games and manage your account?
Responsible gambling 10% Which deposit, loss and time limits, time-outs and self-exclusion terms does it offer, and does it point you to BetGuard or your province’s program?
Customer support 10% Can you reach a person around the clock, by chat or phone, in English and French, and does it publish how it handles complaints?

Each criterion gets a rating from 0 to 10. The overall score is the weighted average, rounded to one decimal, and the ranking follows it.

How we rate each criterion

  • Licensing & safety: a clean registration in Ontario or Alberta, or a provincial operator, starts near the top. Each AGCO penalty costs points, more for recent ones and those about player protection. Loose claims, such as an app listing that says a brand serves provinces that don’t license it, cost points too.
  • Game library: we count games where the lobby lets us, as with FanDuel’s 3,886 in Ontario, and otherwise use the casino’s own published figure. A casino that publishes no figure, and whose lobby we couldn’t count, is scored conservatively.
  • Payments & payouts: published withdrawal times count most, then fees, Interac support and minimums. “Instant” marketing without published times scores lower than a clear table.
  • App & experience: ratings on Canada’s App Store and on Google Play, weighted by how many Canadians rated them, on the date we checked.
  • Responsible gambling: the range of limits and breaks, how long a limit increase takes, self-exclusion terms and links to BetGuard or provincial programs. A mandatory limit, such as PlayNow’s weekly deposit limit in BC, scores highest.
  • Customer support: 24/7 live chat, a phone line, French-language help and a published complaints process.

What we leave out

Bonuses and loyalty programs. Ontario’s Registrar’s Standard 2.05 prohibits advertising that communicates gambling inducements, bonuses and credits, except on an operator’s own site and through direct marketing to players who’ve given consent, and Standard 1.19 makes operators answerable for affiliates. So our Canadian pages carry no offers, no bonus columns and no bonus scores.

Odds of winning. Casino games have a fixed house edge; a casino doesn’t make a slot more generous by being better run. We note where casinos show each game’s return to player (RTP), which helps you choose games.

Where our facts come from

  • Regulators: iGaming Ontario’s directory of regulated operators and sites, the Alberta iGaming Corporation’s list of registered sites, the AGLC’s registrant list, and the AGCO’s enforcement news.
  • The casinos themselves: terms and conditions, cashier and payment pages, help centres and responsible gambling pages. Where a live page couldn’t be read, we used the Internet Archive’s dated copy and say so.
  • App stores: Canada’s App Store and Google Play, with the rating count on the date checked.

Every fact on a review is dated, and the sources are listed at the bottom of each page. We don’t use review sites as sources for Canadian casino facts.

Frequently asked questions

Why are provincial sites like OLG and PlayNow in the ranking?

Because for many Canadians they're the only legal option: PlayNow is the only legal online casino in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. We score them on the same criteria as private casinos, and OLG.ca earns its place in Ontario on merit.

Why don't you rank offshore casinos?

No province licenses them, so they can't legally take bets from Canadians, and you'd have no Canadian regulator to turn to. In 2025 a Manitoba court permanently barred Bodog from the province, ruling that taking bets there violates the Criminal Code.

Why don't you show welcome bonuses?

Ontario's Registrar's Standard 2.05 bans advertising that communicates gambling bonuses or credits outside an operator's own site and direct marketing to players who've opted in, and Standard 1.19 makes operators responsible for their affiliates. Rather than list offers in some provinces and not others, we leave bonuses out across Canada.

Does a casino paying SafeBet.ai change its score?

No. Every rating is shown and explained in the review, and the order of the ranking follows the overall scores; the site won't build if it doesn't. If we earn a referral fee from a casino, the link is marked as sponsored. See our editorial policy.

How often do you update the ranking?

Whenever a casino changes its payments, games or apps, a new operator registers in Ontario or Alberta, or a regulator acts, such as an AGCO penalty. Every change is dated in the ranking's update history.
